Continuing the Crochet for a Cause Movement

Hooked on Healthy builds on the success of Crochet for a Cause: Ridge to Reef, an initiative that used crochet as a tool to raise awareness about environmental protection and the connection between land and sea.

Through Ridge to Reef, crochet was used to bring people together, share knowledge, and demonstrate how creativity can support positive change.

Hooked on Healthy continues this approach by focusing on another important aspect of community well-being: healthy lifestyles. The initiative recognizes that health is shaped by the choices we make, the connections we build, and the knowledge we share.

A Day of Learning, Creating, and Connecting

Participants will enjoy a full day of activities focused on holistic wellness, including:

Spiritual Health

A reflection inspired by 3 John 2:

“Beloved, I wish above all things that thou mayest prosper and be in health, even as thy soul prospereth.”

This session will encourage participants to consider the importance of spiritual well-being as part of a balanced and healthy life.

Physical Health

Health professionals will share practical guidance on healthy lifestyle choices, wellness practices, and ways individuals and families can make positive changes.

Mental Health

Participants will explore the importance of mental wellness, self-care, and strategies for maintaining positive emotional health.

Crochet Creation

Participants will use their creativity and crochet skills to create colourful fruit and vegetable-inspired pieces that celebrate healthy choices.

Creating Through Crochet

Participants will have access to crochet patterns designed around fruit and vegetable-inspired creations. However, the goal is not for participants to complete every design.

To ensure that everyone can enjoy the experience without feeling overwhelmed, each participant will select the creation they would like to make and focus on developing that piece.

Through four Tutor Tuesday sessions, participants will receive crochet guidance, support, and encouragement as they practise their chosen design, build confidence in their skills, and prepare their creations for International Crochet Day.

Tutor Tuesdays: Crochet Support Sessions

Session Date
Tutor Tuesday 1 Tuesday, 18 August
Tutor Tuesday 2 Tuesday, 25 August
Tutor Tuesday 3 Tuesday, 1 September
Tutor Tuesday 4 Tuesday, 8 September

The final Tutor Tuesday session will provide an opportunity for participants to complete final touches and prepare their creations ahead of the event on Saturday, 12 September.

Participant Experience

For a $100 investment, participants will receive:

  • Crochet materials, including yarn allocation
  • Access to selected crochet patterns
  • Four Tutor Tuesday crochet support sessions
  • Lunch on the day of the event
  • Participation in Crochet for a Cause: Hooked on Healthy
  • Opportunities to connect with other crocheters and community members
  • The opportunity to showcase completed creations

The investment supports participants in developing their creativity, strengthening their crochet skills, and exploring the possibilities of handmade products.

Supporting Creativity and Economic Empowerment

A key focus of Hooked on Healthy is demonstrating how creativity can support economic opportunities.

Participants who complete creations will have the opportunity to showcase and sell their work during the marketplace segment of the event from 3:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m.

The marketplace provides a platform for crocheters to:

  • share their handmade creations
  • connect with potential customers
  • celebrate their skills
  • explore crochet as a creative business opportunity

Participation in selling is optional. The goal is to create an encouraging environment where every participant can learn, create, and celebrate their progress.

Building Community Through Crochet

Hooked on Healthy brings together members of the crochet community, including participants from previous crochet classes, Crochet for a Cause initiatives, youth crochet activities, and crafting programmes.

The event provides an opportunity for crocheters to reconnect, meet new members of the community, share skills, and celebrate creativity across generations.

By bringing together experienced crocheters, beginners, youth, families, and supporters, Hooked on Healthy creates a space where people can learn from one another and create meaningful connections.
