Enhancing the floral beauty of Andromeda Gardens with Crochet

Elaine’s Caribbean Crochet has donated the Signature Flowers Installation to Andromeda Gardens.

The GEF SGP UNDP CEEP Crochet for a Cause: Ridge to Reef Project “Flowers of Barbados” Signature Piece is centred by a red 5-petal pride of Barbados flower, with a blue lotus, pink water lily, red and pink desert rose and red hibiscus at its corners.  There are 7 large flowers, 6 sun flowers, 4 yellow, white and blue flowers, 39 ixora flowers and 21 leaves.  Therefore, there are 77 pieces affixed to a foam board via glue gun.

The replicas were created based on the flowers found at the following link – https://barbados.org/plants.htm

The yarn used included Yarn Laine Acrylic Yarn Standard as well as Premier Basix Chunky Yarn.

The pride of Barbados flower and desert rose flower was created by Allison Holford of Arca Creative Concepts. The blue lotus, red rose, pink water lily and yellow, white and blue flowers were created by Karen Roberts of Karen’s Touch BB. The sunflowers were created by Sybil Fielder of Crochet Nooks by Anne. The hibiscus was created by Nichole Carter. The ixora flowers were created by Karen Roberts of Karen’s Touch BB and Nikisha Toppin of Elaine’s Caribbean Crochet. The leaves were created by Karen Roberts of Karen’s Touch BB and Sybil Fielder of Crochet Nooks by Anne.

This piece was created to show the ecosystems associated with the ridge (land) and coral reef.

The business at Andromeda is owned by Sharon, a British Barbadian. Her focus is on ensuring community inclusion, protecting Iris Bannochie’s legacy and conserving and enhancing Barbados’ biodiversity , plant and wildlife. Importantly, she wants to showcase our Bajan plant stories – our amazing heritage through our use of plants, relevant to who we are as Bajans and super-interesting for all visitors. Her love of nature is evident throughout Andromeda.
