SBA’s “A Business Affair”: Mentorship and Meaningful Connections

On Friday, February 20, 2026, the Small Business Association of Barbados (SBA) hosted a unique Valentine’s-themed networking event titled “A Business Affair.” Designed to mirror the concept of speed dating, the evening focused on business matching, collaboration, and mentorship within the local entrepreneurial community.

Among the professionals invited to support emerging entrepreneurs was Elaine of Elaine’s Caribbean Crochet, who participated as a mentor, bringing more than ten years of hands-on experience in the crochet and creative business industry.

“A Business Affair” reimagined Valentine’s Day networking by focusing on business relationships instead of romantic ones. The structured networking format allowed entrepreneurs to rotate through conversations, exchange ideas, and connect with potential collaborators.

Held at the Lloyd Erskine Sandiford Centre in St. Michael, the event created an environment where small business owners could share their entrepreneurial journeys, learn from experienced mentors and gain practical advice for growing their businesses

Events like this play a critical role in strengthening Barbados’ small business ecosystem, giving entrepreneurs access to insights that often take years to learn independently.

As the founder of Elaine’s Caribbean Crochet, Nikisha Toppin brought valuable real-world knowledge about building and sustaining a creative brand in the Caribbean marketplace.

Mentorship is one of the most powerful tools available to entrepreneurs. For new business owners especially, guidance from someone who has already navigated similar challenges can save time, resources, and frustration.

By participating as a mentor, Nikisha contributed to knowledge sharing within the creative community, encouraging new entrepreneurs, and strengthening the local small business network

Participation in events like SBA’s “A Business Affair” highlights Elaine’s commitment not only to growing her own brand but also to supporting the wider community of Caribbean entrepreneurs.  As Elaine’s Caribbean Crochet continues to expand, mentorship and community engagement remain important pillars of the brand’s mission.
